This is my Alt – There are many like it but this one is mine.
February 24, 2009Welcome to the fifth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, this month’s topic comes to us from Mynxee of Life in Low Sec. She asks “Alts and Metagaming: Is playing two accounts who are logged in at the same time and work together (hauler/miner, explorer/combat associate, trade alts in trade hubs) a form of metagaming that is “ruining the game”?“
When I first read this month’s Eve Blog Banter I immediately went on the defensive and ranted around my house mumbling “I am not a Metagamer!” while attacking dishes with a vengance. Upon the realization that this would end horribly if I immediately started blogging about it I decided to let it stew overnight and start writing tomorrow. So let’s start at the beginning what is metagaming? According to Wikipedia:
A recent slang definition of Metagaming, popular among computer and video game fans, is any tactic in a computer or video game that uses one or more features of that game that lie outside the intended gameplay use, or exploit errors in programming structures. For example, a player who took advantage of a bug in the game to gain some advantage would be metagaming. An example would be deliberately getting one’s character killed in order to return to the last saved game.
Ok well now we are getting into some interesting territory. Is having multiple accounts outside the EULA? Reading though it no it isn’t you just have to have purchased the software for every account you have – obviously – and then you are in the green. So technically no you aren’t Metagaming. Meagaming is the exploit the asshats used on the POS’s to get shit built without all the materials.
But sitting down and thinking this over for an evening I came to a realization – If tomorrow they changed everything where you could only have one account per user I would cancel all my accounts. I’ve sat down and tried to just play Tanalei but seeing her in missions is truely a sad experience when she is flying solo. She can remote rep like a Badass! But she can’t kill for shit. I love my Orca on Avesaria and I made her for defense from can flippers and mining bonuses. She can’t mine for shit but she can easily run missions on her own in the Drake or Raven.
My point is I don’t understand people who can be content with only one account. I experienced eve for my first 30 days with one account and I was miserable. I added Avesaria and the world got so much brighter. Why would anyone fly an Orca if they only have 1 account? You make zero profit. You can’t mine you are just sitting there giving bonuses and taking everyone’s ore for the hauler to pick up or for you to fly back to base. You get none of it unless you charge isk for bonuses and that just makes you out to be an ass. So you drop 600 million and get an amazing ship and no way to ever get a return on your investment. That’s just bad business. – Wow i just realized how Caldari that is of me…
This is my Alt. There are many like it but this one is mine. My Alt is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Alt is useless. Without my Alt I am useless. I must use my alt for good. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my Alt and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

Good post mate. EVE Online is a game that is meant to be played by more than one player.
Alt accounts allow those of us who may be alone to leverage what we have to be more effective.

I agree that the Orca is definitely a ship for group operations…we’ve just started making use of ours, with me flying it, for mining ops. If I didn’t have corpmates I’d definitely need an alt to make best use of it.

Having a few alts doesn’t change ONE IOTA how much I love interacting with all the real players out there–that IS the game, as far as I’m concerned. Alts just make things so much easier and allows me to conduct my activities on MY schedule.
Good points, like you I had to research as well before I could answer…my alt allows me to escape if i don’t feel like talking I can disappear into some what anonymity.
