Faelan and Dane
My mother was Ekundayo, a Wolf Guardinal who guarded the gates of Elysium for many millennium. Being eternal is generally a beautiful thing seeing the rise and fall of many civilizations and doing everything in your power for the side of good. However even a eternals life can be swept into an almost hopeless existence when you discover that you can never have offspring. One day after another long battle she went to her master commander and requested release from the war; to be turned mortal and granted children. Nothing was more important to her at this time than bearing children for she was infertile and her life mate had left her for this more than a thousand years ago and she was never capable of getting over this completely.
The commander seeing that the battle had forever left her eyes and that she had decided the outcome of her internal war decided to grant her request knowing if he didn’t she would deteriorate and die over the next years. He split her spirit imbuing her with her human face and giving her two children; a daughter and a son.
My brother was born first taking the powerful spirit and form of the wolf and being imbued with her silvery coat he was powerful, muscular and strong and you could see he would grow to be very very strong and graceful. He blessed him with the life of his sister. Giving him the possibility for life in his prime at up to 100 years instead of that of a standard wolf. Upon seeing the power of her spirit transformed to him Ekundayo smiled and named him Dane after her old life mate. She held him close to her and looked to the commander for the remaining child.
The commander when he went to make her second child, myself, from the remaining half of the spirit was shocked to see how much of the wolf remained and a tear came to his eye for he knew this girl would not have the wolf form just the soul. He made her beautiful as an apology and gave her the eyes of her mother the color of fresh frozen ice and knew if she ever faced conflict they would turn to unrelenting steel. He blessed her with a goldenrod coat so that if she were to ever find her wolf form she would be uncannily beautiful in all forms that she possessed as an apology for the constant ache she would forever feel bring born to the wrong body. Blessing again the 100 year span for being in her prime, he brought all of her together and gave her to her mother who was shocked to see the tear in the commanders eye. She named me Faelan, which means little wolf.
The commander then placed Ekundayo and her two children on the planet of Athena, named after one of the gods that Ekundayo had fought valiantly beside many times before. They were placed just outside of a small city, Brennanville, in a quaint forest house where Ekundayo proceeded to raise her two children.
Over the years we were told many grand stories of our mother’s life and battles. Both personal wars of the spirit and physical ones of the planes. We were taught to hunt and fish and forage and craft, and of course to tell all of the stories our mother ever told us. It was an interesting family being both human and wolf we lived as a pack almost more than a standard family. We regularly conversed with the wolves of the surrounding areas and in the harsh winters we even brought them into our home.
As Dane and I grew we started venturing out alone helping animals and people in need whenever we could while we hunted. On the times we went to town, about once a season, we would hear wild tales about a girl and her wolf taking down bears and rescuing travelers. We did our best not to laugh until we got home because of how outrageous some of the stories we heard were and we knew what originally started them.
One evening in the late fall Dane and I headed out to get a few more supplies for the coming winter and advised out mother we would be back in about three days. We had felled a dear after two days and as we were dressing it a feeling came over both of us. Something was wrong at home and we needed to get there as quickly as possible. My brother and I called for the local wolf pack to use the kill so it wouldn’t be wasted as we immediately left for home; my brother carrying me upon his back at times so we could progress faster. When we arrived at home at sunrise the next morning the sight we saw at home was still the most haunting thing we have ever seen.
The door of our home was ripped off and laying on the front lawn there were deep claw marks and blood everywhere throughout the house and an ever present feeling of evil. Parts of our mother were scattered everywhere and written on the eastern wall was a message. “I will find you and exact the same punishment on you as your mother. No spawn of Ekundayo shall live.” It was carved with some sort of claw and highlighted with our mothers blood. We screamed and wailed and cried and mourned. At hearing our cries the wolf pack we hunted with and some of the other wildlife we helped came to the house and assisted us in building a cairn for her. We mourned for a full moon cycle over tie different animals and people coming to pay their respects to our mother who had never done anything but good.
After a moon cycle the Guardinal Commander that made us came and paid his respects and told us to leave the valley for our mother wouldn’t want us to mourn forever and would want us to live; she gave eternity for us. We heeded his words and swore revenge on whatever creature it was that had slain our mother.
We headed for the city and went to the local inn to find a new place for ourselves since we were alone now. We started working at the inn as performing artists and enacting the great stories we knew so well of our mother both Dane and I performing together as one to make the stories come alive. We were given a room and food and required to do some basic tavern work as well as entertainment for our board. And when the press of too many people overcame us we still escape to the wolf pack and my run for a moon constantly hunting for any information pertaining to our mother’s killer.
